Northern Powergrid launches Validium EAP

Strategic review leads to more proactive approach to wellbeing.

BERKHAMSTEAD – 3RD NOVEMBER 2014 – NORTHERN POWERGRID, one of the UK’s leading power distribution companies, has selected Validium to provide its first Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).

Deb Piggett, HR Business Partner for Northern Powergrid, said: “The nature of our business involves delivering electricity safely and reliably to 3.9 million customers. Naturally there’s always been a really strong emphasis on safety, but recently we took the decision to adopt a more holistic approach to the health and well-being of our 2,670 people.”

She adds, “A series of health MOTS were carried out by our new occupational health provider Duradiamond earlier this year and this highlighted that we needed to take a more proactive approach to raising awareness of health problems such as high blood pressure and BMI. We were also aware that some employee absence related to issues outside of work that can affect all of us from time to time, such as relationship breakdowns, problems with children, bereavement and critically ill relatives. All of which meant we wanted to start doing more to proactively manage both the physical and emotional health of employees. We recognised that putting in place an EAP could have significant benefits.”

Validium was selected because of its focus on both the physical and emotional health of employees. “We selected Validium because it was able to provide us with a programme that suited our requirements. As well as providing employees access to professionally accredited counsellors, expert debt, legal, financial and child and eldercare experts, we were also given a wealth of information to help employees manage their health and well-being and make healthy eating decisions when working off-site, which was particularly useful.”

She adds, “Although we’ve only just launched the EAP, we’re already working in partnership with Validium to encourage employees to use all the tools provided, including vClub, an online resource centre for employees and their families to start accessing all the information they need to improve both their physical and emotional wellbeing ”
